Another tip is to allocate pockets of time each day for checking your email, instead of reading them all as they come in.

I try and only check my email at key times that are not normally super productive in terms of getting work done. 

For me, I pick times when there's a bit of noise around the house from the kids. Or maybe late at night when I'm a bit tired.

It's hard to get much creative work done then, so I spend those less productive moments reading email and the odd forum post.  (it's currently 12.39am, so this is a good example of me doing this)

Focus is definitely the key, but picking the right times to focus on certain tasks is also very advantageous. ;-)
